asheville city building

Designed by Douglas D. Ellington in 1926, with construction completed in 1928, this Art Deco building is a prominent feature on the Asheville skyline. The design of the roof reflects the mountain background.
The exterior of the building was in need of restora-tion and repair due to water infiltration, materials distress, and deterioration of the walls and roof. Repair work included masonry cleaning and restoration; steel shelf angle repair; restoration of decorative terra cotta trim and roof tiles; replacement of sheet metal flashings; and membrane roofing. The terra cotta roof repairs involved removal of the tiles, installation of a membrane underlayment, and reinstallation of the tiles. Architectural and Engineering services were completed in three phases including investigation, testing and analysis of existing conditions and materials; production of construction documents; and construction administration.
Construction was completed in late 1998 for $1,200,000.
Work on this project was completed under a joint venture partnership, Wescott & Harris.
