christ episcopal church exterior

Originally constructed in 1854, Christ Episcopal Church includes an unusual 105-foot high brick steeple accented with stucco detailing. The steeple was restored including extensive masonry restoration and conservation on both the exterior and the interior. Other work included stucco replacement, installation of a new copper cross, lightning protection and repair of wood windows and louvers.

Masonry conservation focused on the condition and qualities of the original brick, which were handmade on site and are extremely soft and porous. The brick was especially deteriorated on the interior of the steeple where lesser quality brick were used. Compounding problems included damage due to lightning strikes, the poor quality of previous repairs and a steel frame that had been installed over the exterior. The frame was removed and areas of the brick were rebuilt, with complete repointing of the spire.

The project was completed in November of 1996 at a construction cost of approximately $160,000.
