Exchange Building

exchange building, currently harris architects' office

Originally Citizens Telephone Company, the building was constructed in 1953 to accommodate new equipment for dial service. The building is now a contributing resource within the Main Street National Register Historic District.

After many years of neglect and use for storage, the building was purchased in 2002 and was rehabilitated for offices as a project eligible for state and federal Investment Tax Credits. Work included selective removal of added features, restoration of glass block and steel sash, stucco repair, and the addition of a new exterior stair.

The first floor is leased to tenants, while the second floor now houses Harris Architects. The interior features exposed structural members and an open plan with partial height partitions. The result is an interior that recalls the original utilitarian purpose of the space while providing an inviting work environment. Accents, such as large interior windows and trellises across the central hall, add interest and also serve functional purposes.
