old fort train station

Constructed ca. 1891, the Old Fort Train Station once was the western-most station in North Carolina as the mountains to the west were a natural barrier. The station was expanded several times and then was left dormant as an active station in the 1970s.
The station was rehabilitated with funding from the US Department of Transportation Federal Highway Administration through TEA 21 grants, the North Carolina Department of Transportation Rail Division, and the Town of Old Fort. Plans included the return of passenger train service and use as a transportation museum and offices for the Chamber of Commerce.
The passenger waiting room was restored for its original purpose, while the remainder of the building serves as a museum with space for a multi-purpose meeting room in the original baggage storage area. Construction was completed in early 2005 at a cost of almost $1 million.
