john h. goodwin house

The John H. Goodwin House and Store is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and sits on Highway 11, a National Scenic Byway. Started as a log structure in 1793, the house was gradually expanded to reach its present form in the 1840s. The plantation house was the central structure on an antebellum plantation that grew to comprise more than 4,000 acres. The property also served as the local Post Office after 1824 and as a general store as early as the 1840s.

The house will be restored for use as a house museum while the store building, constructed ca. 1870, will become a Visitor's Center. The remainder of the site will be developed with parking, trails, picnic areas, and a new structure with facilities for visitors.

A multi-year project, work started with extensive physical investigation to date the structures and determine their condition. Temporary stablization was completed in the summer of 2006 to protect them until full restoration can take place.
