FIRM PROFILE

Harris Architects' work is a mix of new construction and historic preservation that reflects the expertise and interests of founding partners, Ellen Pratt Harris AIA and Douglas K. Harris AIA.

After moving to North Carolina in 1995, Ellen started a practice focusing on the restoration and rehabilitation of historic buildings. The firm's work broadened in 1998 to include residential, commercial and religious buildings when Doug became a partner. Full architectural services are now provided to both private and public clients for a wide range of project types.

In 2002, the firm purchased the historic telephone company building in downtown Brevard. The derelict building was rehabilitated using historic tax credits and showcases the firm's creativity with a cost-effective approach, evident in the loft-like interior of the second floor that houses their offices.

The firm is now listed as the fourth largest in Western North Carolina with a staff that includes three registered architects. Creative design solutions and solid technical expertise are combined for successful award winning projects. The latest object-based computer-aided design software is employed to demonstrate design solutions with three-dimensional views and animated walk-throughs. These are then developed into detailed construction documents.
