The Exchange Building
Originally Citizens Telephone Company, the Exchange Building was constructed in 1953 to accommodate new equipment for dial service. The building is now a contributing resource within the Main Street National Register Historic District and a local historic landmark.
After many years of neglect, Harris Architects purchased the building in 2002 and rehabilitated it for offices as a project eligible for state and federal Investment Tax Credits. Work included selective removal of added features, restoration of glass block and steel sash, stucco repair, and the addition of a new exterior stair. The first floor is leased to tenants, while the second floor houses Harris Architects.
The interior features exposed structural members and an open plan with partial height partitions. The result is a space that recalls the original utilitarian purpose of the building while providing an inviting work environment. Accents, such as large interior windows and trellises across the central hall, add interest and also serve functional purposes.
Since 1998 Harris Architects has been providing services for historic preservation, renovation, and new construction projects. We are committed to quality design that enhances our built and natural environment. This work is personally led by founding principals Ellen Pratt Harris AIA and Douglas K. Harris AIA, LEED AP.
After relocating to Brevard in 1995, Ellen started an architectural practice with an emphasis on historic preservation, applying expertise gained from work on prominent historic landmarks in Atlanta and Washington, DC. In 1998 the office expanded to include new construction when Doug brought his experience in commercial and residential design to the practice. The firm then became Harris Architects PLLC.
Harris Architects currently includes a staff of three registered architects, two of whom are also LEED Accredited Professionals. Our practice is centered on the needs of the client, providing creative design solutions and solid technical expertise to focus their vision for a successful project.
